Gasp with the joy of perspiration and let out all your stress and pain with a wonderful hike through some of the most sought-after trails.
Be it with family or friends, it is bliss to conquer the heights of nature together and witness breathtaking panoramic views. Munnar is renowned for its adventurous trekking trails. Your trekking gear will have the time of its life with the grassy and rocky landscape of the hills.

With a cosy climate, acres of lush tea plantations, green grasslands, pristine streams, majestic rivers, and gigantic hills, Munnar is one of the best places to trek in Kerala. With a mix of different terrains, there are several hills to choose from—each offering a unique experience.

Here are six well-known trekking trails in Munnar:

1. Chokramudi Peak

The Chokramudi trek is the most prestigious trek in Munnar. This legendary mountain is a challenge you’ll want to take on. The trail is divided into four parts, allowing you to choose your level of difficulty: the Shola walk, grass stroll, steep climb, and a more rugged, dangerous terrain. All four trails lead to breathtaking viewpoints at the top.

It’s recommended to go with a local guide, as some of the paths can be confusing. With numerous valleys and aromatic cardamom plantations, the trail offers a refreshing experience. Carry snacks, lunch, and plenty of water, as this trail is long and tiring. The best time to visit is from December to February, when the weather is moderate and pleasant.

2. Letchmi Hills

Located just 3 kilometers from Munnar, Letchmi Hills is a famous trekking destination. The 23-kilometer trail is a challenging but rewarding hike. From the top, you’ll catch enchanting views of Pallivasal and Anachal.

The trek starts at a height of 145 meters above sea level with a walk through lush tea plantations. As you ascend, the landscape shifts to grassy slopes. The highest point is about 1,950 meters above sea level. You'll see acres of tea gardens and patches of Shola forest. On a clear day, you might even spot Anamudi—the highest peak in South India. Watch for exotic birds floating among cardamom and coffee plantations.

3. Meeshapulimala

Meeshapulimala is named for its resemblance to a tiger’s face. This trail gained popularity after the movie Charlie showcased it. Located at 8,661 feet above sea level, the trek takes you through elegant tea estates, sparkling streams, and blooming rhododendrons.

The trail spans eight different hills and stretches for around 8 kilometers. It's a moderate-level trek, making it suitable for most age groups. With rolling grasslands and refreshing views, this trek is a favorite for nature enthusiasts and photographers.

4. Top Station

Top Station offers panoramic views of the Western Ghats, the Kurangini Hills in Theni, and the majestic Kolukkumalai ranges. Clouds hover low over lush green mountains and valleys, creating a surreal landscape.

There are two paths to reach Top Station from Kurangini. The first is a stone-laid path that is fairly easy. The second, through a coffee plantation, is more scenic but moderately challenging. After about 1.5 kilometers, the trail becomes steeper. The full trek is approximately 9 kilometers long and is definitely worth the effort for the stunning views at the top.

5. Thoovanam Waterfalls Trek

One of the best ways to explore the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is to trek to the Thoovanam Waterfalls. This 4-kilometer trek starts from the Alampetty check post and follows the Chinnar River to the waterfalls.

The falls cascade from a height of 84 feet, creating a mesmerising view. Plan your trek between 8 AM and 2 PM. During your hike, you may encounter elephants, giant grizzled squirrels, langurs, and fluttering butterflies. The falls originate from the Pambar River and are a perfect reward for your hiking efforts.

6. Anamudi Peak

As the highest peak in South India, Anamudi stands tall at 2,695 meters above sea level. You can approach the peak through the Eravikulam National Park. While entry to the exact summit may be restricted, the view from the base or nearby trails is equally spectacular.

The name Anamudi means “elephant’s forehead”, based on its shape and legends of elephant presence. From Munnar to Udumalpet, you can catch several glimpses of the peak. This region is rich in biodiversity and is home to Asian elephants, Nilgiri Tahr, lion-tailed macaques, gaurs, and more.

Listen to the symphony of the Vigai, Thamirabarani, and Periyar rivers as you trek. You’ll encounter plant species like blackwood, teak, Gaultheria fragrantissima, and Arundinaria densifolia. If you visit during the Neelakurinji bloom (once every 12 years), you’ll be treated to a dreamlike vista of violet-blue flowers.

Known as the "Himalayas of the South", Anamudi attracts travelers and photographers from around the globe.

With its variety of trekking trails, majestic rivers, giant peaks, and scenic routes, Munnar is truly a paradise for adventurers. So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags, grab your trekking gear, and head to Munnar for the hiking experience of a lifetime!
