While planning an itinerary for Munnar, most tour plans begin with Mattupetty, along with Kundala Dam and Lake. The name Mattupetty comes from the words ‘Maadu’ meaning hills, and ‘Patty’ meaning village or settlement.
En route to Top Station, you will come across the KFDC Flower Garden, just 2 kilometres from the town. This garden is home to a variety of rare and vibrant flowers and is a must-visit for flower lovers and nature enthusiasts.
As you move through the lush tea plantations, you’ll find yourself immersed in a sea of green beauty. Photo points along the slopes provide perfect spots to capture the serene and heavenly vistas of Munnar. A fascinating stop is the famous ‘Honey Bee Tree’, where countless honeycombs hang from its branches—an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon.
Continuing on the Top Station road, you’ll reach the iconic Mattupetty Dam. Visitors can walk along the stretch of the dam and take in the panoramic view of hill ranges and shimmering lake waters.
Constructed between 1955 and 1956, the dam holds historical significance. Before it was filled, the area housed a temple built by Tamil labourers dedicated to the goddess Mariamman, along with bungalows, labour camps, and the British-built Mattupetty Market—all of which now lie submerged. When water levels drop in the summer or during droughts, remnants of these old structures resurface, offering glimpses into the past. The Kundala Valley Monorails—destroyed during the great flood of 1924—can also be seen. These well-preserved remains, built with stone and lime, stand strong even today.
Just ahead of the dam lies Echo Point, a favourite spot for tourists. Shout into the open, and the hills will echo your voice back—a simple yet thrilling experience. The nearby roadside stalls sell handcrafted toys, hats, corn, and locally grown spices, adding charm to the visit.
Further along is the Sethu Parvathi Puram Dam, also known as Kundala Arch Dam, built in 1946 as part of the Pallivasal Hydroelectric Project. Located in Chundavurrai Estate near Top Station, the dam spans 259 meters in length and 47 meters in height. It was inaugurated by Her Highness Rani Sethu Lakshmi Bai, after whom it was named. With five spillway shutters, the dam covers an area of 2.5 square kilometers.
Kundala is another favorite destination for tourists visiting Munnar. While boating is available at Mattupetty and Echo Point, the Shikara rides at Kundala Dam are particularly special—offering a peaceful experience reminiscent of Dal Lake in Kashmir.
